Taken from the autobiographies of Induk Pahk, (a personal family friend), this story targeted toward youth boils down Pahk’s early years and her persistence in gaining an education. It portrays turn-of-the-century Korean life and culture with the kind of details that make the story real and poignant, and the trials and bravery of both mother and daughter toward self-improvement are truly inspiring. What is missing is Pahk's deep Christian faith, and the cover illustration shows a Westernized vision of Korea in that era.
